Most expats return home at some stage.....
Some will look forward to this day, whilst others may be less than enthusiastic. But whatever the feeling about the move most will believe that they are returning home to a familiar way of life, how difficult can it be?
Well, depending on how long you have been away and whether you return to the same area/house that you left, amongst other things, these factors can greatly affect the results of your repatriation experience. You will have a natural expectation that everything will have stayed the same 'at home' however this is seldom the case. Many things will have changed whilst you have been away, as well as the fact that you will also have changed in this time period, so nothing will be as it was.
Many returning expats or 'repats' as they have been called, feel like foreigners when they return home and go through many stages of settling in, much the same as when they first went overseas to live and work. This process has been called reverse culture-
Realising that 'being home' may not always mean 'feeling at home' is the first step to a successful repatriation. Click on the country flag buttons below to read articles by repats who have experienced this process.
